Día de los Muertos encourages the remembrance and celebration of the lives of departed loved ones. Originating from Mexico, this holiday represents when the border between the spirit world and the real world dissolves. During two days (November 1 for the spirits of the children and November 2 for All Souls Day), the souls of the dead awaken and return to the living world to celebrate with those they left behind.

An extension of Baseman’s longstanding exploration of mortality and loss, the artist celebrates Day of the Dead connecting with his fellow Americans of Mexican heritage, as well as his many friends and colleagues in Mexico.
