Since it’s his first birthday, we are trying to play it by ear to see if we celebrate two separate birthdays or one birthday together!!!

As my family prepares for sale of my parent’s home, my studio is offering my RED TOBY KEY. A very limited edition sculpture cast from the real key from my family’s closet in the home where I learned family secrets. But on this key, I cast the head of Toby, our best friend and Keeper of Secrets. The original version I gave personally to those who came to my @skirball_la museum opening “The Door is Always Open.”

The red version was created for my MOCA Taipei museum exhibition. We found a few extra keys and offering them to collectors. As my father would always tell me, “The door is always open, Gary,” meaning his home would always be my home. ❤️

After each of our Emmy’s win, our crew would go to the Polo Lounge for martinis. (Well, we did it twice.) There is no more of a Hollywood moment to all walk in to the Polo Lounge and place all your Emmys on the table together to create the shiny glittery gold art installation of Hollywood Magic. If you scroll, you’ll see me with a martini and a cigarette. I don’t smoke but I’m trying to channel my best Humphrey Bogart.

I know I look like I was part of the JANUARY 6th I

I know I look like I was part of the JANUARY 6th INSURRECTION but this photo was taken more like Jan 6, 1971! And instead of the Capitol, I was in the basement of Britt’s Department Store at Town & Country on 3rd & Fairfax.
The Britt’s building has changed over the years with its last incarnation was the Brittney Spears Experience before the pandemic.

I know this photo isn’t politically correct today, with a “kid me” holding a plastic toy rifle, having a plastic toy army helmet, wearing an Alcatraz souvenir t-shirt and my favorite red, white, and blue bell bottom pants. In 1971, you could be against the Vietnam War and still pretend you were in WWII fighting the Nazis. You could also make believe at the same time, you were breaking out of Alcatraz and try to be hippy cool in bell bottoms, and then hope we would end up at Sav-On Drug Store and get a nickle ice cream!
On that note, I hope today’s Right Wing March is an embarrassing failure and all those who took part in the Insurrection do serious prison time.

I’ve tried to allow myself to settle since Blackie’s Memorial, while still working full time to finish the art for Blackie’s Mighty Paw book.
I do miss my conversations with Blackie the Cat, although I don’t miss the occasional loss of blood and scars. Well, the scars were kind of cool on my nose. Bosko has been a joy, watching how he has transformed the Red Elifant ritual into his own by adding new elements and new energy. Happy Caturday!

Last night after midnight,
I finished the first draft of art pieces for THE MIGHTY PAW, a story told to me by the great Blackie the Cat years ago. I promised I would illustrate his TRUE story and have it published as a book.
It’s been an uphill struggle for me, and I finally completed over 50 paintings on paper.
This is a creative breakthrough since I’ve been painting these for over 5 years! I’d give myself deadlines but never met them. During the pandemic with Blackie by my side, I kept promising to finish it during his lifetime, but that didn’t happen.

Blackie the Cat, among his other talents, was a Grandmaster in the Art of Combat with the powerful Red Elifants! He knocked them down by the bedside table for over a decade. Blackie then confided in me that knocking these Elifants was not a game but a ritual to remember his family’s emotional story between the Black Cats and the Red Elifants.
I’m taking a moment to feel grateful and proud that I finished the art.

A lot on my heart and a lot on my mind. Today is also Yom Kippur, the holiest day for Jews. It is the day of Atonement for one’s sins, and to pray for the dead. A lot to remember and think about.
