THE PROTECTOR.
I just noticed this Roaring Cat in stone on the front of my parents’ old home on Detroit Street. I never noticed it before. Maybe it was never there till now.

This photo of Blackie the Cat was taken two years ago today, January 18, 2020. I just put them side-by-side. Wow, there are actually two Roaring Cat symbols on the front of my old home. Blackie and Bosko. I don’t know what they mean yet. I imagine they both showed up today as symbols to protect me.
I’m a bit emotional losing access to our old home. #garybaseman #baseman
But today is the time to roar and move on.

GOOD BYE, DETROIT STREET.
My family just sold our family home, a fourplex that was just a bit out of the Fairfax District, and not really in Hancock Park either. This is where my parents who were Holocaust survivors laid anchor and lived for 45 years till their passing, both dying in the same bedroom a year and a half apart.
My siblings all lived and attended public school nearby, escaping when we could. But we would all come together here for family holidays.

This brown building was surrounded by these giant “sticker” trees, protecting my parents from the outside world and their dark past. These giant “sticker” trees stood high over their home as guards, always giving shade, warning intruders that if tried to come they would get pierced by their tiny thorny leaves. There was so much shade that grass could never grow in the front yard ever. No matter how much anyone tried, the lawn could only be brown dirt.

Because our family was a bit dysfunctional, the building laid vacant after our parents’ death. My siblings all agreed to always keep the light on in my parents’ old bedroom. The excuse was to keep burglars out. But to me it really felt like the eternal light, a beacon to my parents. Like a lighthouse in this nautical
-themed building, this showed my parents’ spirit that they are always in our hearts.

I drew a farewell drawing in my sketchbook, and found a drawing I did of the home when I was 8 or 9. I included some old family photos taken in the Detroit Street home. My friend Holly Andres and I did a photoshoot back in 2013 to commemorate this home. I especially love the photo when my mom wore my Enlightened Chou mask with her caretaker, Alda.

His power of purr kept me calm during anxious times. Bosko now helps keep me calm and, also, on my toes.

Blackie and Bosko can both be sassy and demand their own way, like wanting to take Linus’s blanket.

I want to thank everyone for their support as I mourned the loss of Blackie the Cat, and began to raise the kitten, Bosko. These times we are living in are a challenge. I hope you enjoy this ragtag video I spent all morning working on with Bosko.

DISNEY’S TEACHER’S PET, THE MOVIE premiered in theaters around the world, January 16, 2004!
I was and still am so proud of this film, and our amazing cast and crew who put it all together.
But I wasn’t too thrilled with the marketing department. Haha. We got some amazing reviews in The NY Times, LA Times, etc. I described this film as one of the most critically acclaimed, lowest box office grossed films opening in 2000 theaters.

I look at this photo from when I was 5, and I look like I’m from the 1920-30’s.
All the movies and cartoons I watched and was inspired by was from that era. I look closer to this photo and I feel liked it was originally black & white and then colorized. I am a “man” out of time. And “boy.”

I started out being a really happy kid. This was one of the last years I’d be normal, before my older brothers and sister deserted me to be teenagers and college students. Then I started this era of becoming a loner and latch key kid that triggered my life as an artist.

MY LARRY DAVID MOMENT. Two years ago, I was lucky

MY LARRY DAVID MOMENT.
Two years ago, I was lucky to get invited to a private screening of “Curb Your Enthusiasm” with Larry David and the cast & crew at the Landmark Theater. I was so excited to snag seats upfront and center!!
Right before the screening began, I was about to say hi to a friend, and I was munching on popcorn that they handed out. When I took a deep breath, a tiny kernel of pop corn got lodged in the back of my throat that gave me an uncomfortable tickle. I began to worry that I was going to have an embarrassing cough during the entire screening, so I started drinking a lot of water. Then when friends and even strangers around me overheard my situation about the tiny pop corn kernel and my uncomfortable tickle, numerous other friends and strangers around me offered me their water too. Once the lights went down and the episode begin, I had to pee immediately, making me so uncomfortable the entire time.
I couldn’t believe it. Instead of enjoying the episode, the pressure on my bladder was unbearable, and all I could think of was waiting for it to end, and rushing to the restroom.
When the episode ended which felt like the longest episode ever, I was about to explode, and instead of being able to rush to the toilet, Larry David and Cast & Crew immediately sat in front of the stage for a Q& A.
So now I was forced to endure this excruciating pain in my bladder the entire time Larry David & panel discussed their entire 20 years in television. I couldn’t get up since I was sitting upfront and center and if I tried to leave, I would’ve interrupted the entire event.
After everything was done, I had to leap over backwards a couple rows to avoid waiting and ran to the men’s room.
I reviewed the episode & event next morning on social media letting people know the new episode left me “uncomfortable” and the Q&A was “unbearable.”

In 2003, I was giving a lecture at @moca about creating Vinyl Toys slash Designer Toys slash Urban Vinyl.
My parents were always supportive and came to hear me speak.
These original Dumb Luck Rabbits, edition of 500, were really limited and sold out quickly. As you can see in the first photo, the @mocastores carried them when they were first released. They also sold some of my original blind box Dunces from Sony Creative too.
